This is a mixed media drawing inspired by Heartship by Dorothy Cross fromThe sounds from a safe harbour festival, 2019. The drawing is referenced from a photo I took of an unknown human heart dating back to the 17th century. Discovered originally in a Cork crypt, then acquired by the General Pitt Rivers museum in the UK. It was then put on loan to be displayed in the Glucksman throughout The sounds from a safe harbour festival. The vision for this drawing occurred to me immediately after experiencing Heartship. It’s the unknown heart, isolated within the vast landscape of the Atlantic Ocean. Drawing on the theme of Heartship. Its A visual response to the thousands of human beings we have lost that have drowned because of immigration. Whose whereabouts are unknown, vanished into the abyss of unkind waters. Journeying Far from their homeplace to being lost to the potential of refuge in a new home in another land, Ireland.
