Lazarus refers to St. Lazarus of Bethany who rose from the dead after four days. This piece was created out of a similar experience which Irish people stereotypically know well, trying to rise from the dead after the mythical four days of summer comes to an end. Then the dreaded ‘fear’ creeps in. One day in the not so distant past, I lifted my booze infused, self- crippled head and encouraged my fellow sufferers, my two dear friends one a gypsy jazz musician, the other gifted at sewing delicate threads to join me on a quest. A journey through the fields off the edge of Corks City, for a naked dip in the cold, life revitalizing waters of the River Lee. Once christened in the Lee’s cool waters we were reborn as our spirited selves. So elated was Sam, my musician friend that he metamorphized into a nudist acrobat. Inspired by this display of life I fortunately had my camera in hand and captured this moment. Once in my studio I drew the same image of Sam several times over in different sizes with classical traditional drawing tools, a pencil and pen. Then I cut the images out and collaged them intuitively in a lyrical way on calligraphy paper. Using a gold ink pen I hand designed an intricate border to match the musicality of Sam’s form to capture the memory of this day down by the water.
